European PhD-Network "Literary and Cultural Studies"

European PhD-Network “Literary and Cultural Studies” (PhDnet)

The newly inaugurated PhDnet “Literary and Cultural Studies” at Justus Liebig Uni-versity (JLU) Giessen is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and constitutes a European research network between the following institutions: JLU, the Finnish Graduate School for Literary Studies in Helsinki and the doctoral programmes in literary and cultural studies at the University of Bergamo, the Catholic University of Lisbon and the University of Stockholm. Members of the PhDnet pursue their doctoral studies at JLU and one of the four partner institutions. Their projects are jointly supervised and lead to bi-national degrees.

Ample Opportunities and supportive structures

The European PhDnet offers a distinctively international research training pro-gramme in the fields of literary and cultural studies, designed jointly by the partici-pating institutions. Therefore, the European PhDnet
  • offers a highly structured international curriculum, organised jointly by the participating institutions and designed to meet the specific needs of (interna-tional) PhD students;
  • provides genuine doctoral symposia and conferences at all different partner institutions;
  • integrates the doctoral candidates into national and international academic communities and facilitates international PhD students’ entry into the German academic landscape;
  • acquaints PhD students with state-of-the-art theories, methodologies, ap-proaches and concepts in the fields of literary and cultural studies;
  • ensures high academic quality of the dissertation while, at the same time, re-ducing the time needed to obtain the degree;
  • encourages independent research from an early stage by fostering publication and conference experience on national and international levels;
  • provides ample opportunity to acquire academic and practical qualifications in cooperation with the GCSC Teaching Centre and the GGK/GCSC Career Service, for example systematic training in academic teaching and other practical and professional skills.
