The International PhD Programme “Literary and Cultural Studies” (IPP)
The International PhD Programme “Literary and Cultural Studies” (IPP) The International PhD Programme “Literary and Cultural Studies“ (IPP) at Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen was founded in 2002. Initially funded by the German Aca-demic Exchange Service (DAAD), the IPP has been financed by JLU since the expira-tion of the DAAD’s maximum funding period in 2007.
The IPP contributes decisively to postgraduate education at JLU and has proved an integral part of the Giessen Graduate School for the Humanities. It closely collabo-rates with the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded since 2006 by the German Research Foundation’s (DFG) Initiative for Excellence, and the European PhDnet “Literary and Cultural Studies”, newly-founded in 2008.
The IPP offers a clearly structured and research-oriented three-year doctoral pro-gramme with a strong international focus. This curriculum is designed to facilitate the completion of the doctoral degree within three years, while at the same time ensuring the academic quality of the PhD. Core modules, seminars, workshops and master classes with renowned scholars from the fields of literary and cultural stud-ies acquaint postgraduate students with state-of-the-art theories and methodolo-gies as well as concepts and approaches. Furthermore, participants are provided with manifold opportunities to gain additional academic and practical qualifica-tions; international members benefit from tutorials and language courses tailored to suit their needs.
The IPP participates in an expansive international network with high-ranking uni-versities and institutions from around the world. Its multi- and bilateral co-operations integrate IPP members into national as well as international academic communities since they foster networking opportunities and encourage a vivid academic exchange among PhD students, Junior Research Fellows and professors.
